I was arrested for having a baby

All I ever wanted was to be a mother. My husband and I tried for years. Thankfully, IVF worked for us.

Though, the stress of everything had already taken its toll. My husband was cheating on me. I left him, of course.

But it didn’t even matter. When I brought my miracle baby home, and put her in her crib, I was so happy.

That’s when I heard the loud pounding on the door, and, “Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.”

“Are you Mary Anderson?”

“Yes.”

“Mary, I need you to put your hands behind your back for me.”

“What?”

“I’ll explain, but right now put your hands behind your back. You’re under arrest.”

I told them my child was in the house alone. That I needed to be with her. That’s when they got rough with me, threw me to the ground. Yelled at me to stop resisting. I wasn’t resisting! I just didn’t understand what was happening.

In the back of the cop car they explained. Because of a recent supreme court case, fertilized embryos were considered humans. And because I signed paperwork to dispose of the unused embryos, I was being charged with eight counts of murder.

Jail is a disgusting place. They told me I wouldn’t see a judge until Monday. It was Saturday.

Sunday morning, I went to the cafeteria for stale food. Three other prisoners sat down by me.

The big mouth breather talked first. “What's a pretty thing like you doing here?”

“I’m innocent. I haven’t done anything.”

“That’s not true. The guards told us what you did. You know what we do to kid killers in jail?”

All three took out shanks.

My last thoughts are with my daughter. She’s all I ever wanted. Now she’ll never have a mother.
